The rationale behind the Scholarship program is as followed: The Grand’Anse region, in the south of Haiti, where the town of Jeremie is located, has approximately 140,000 students with a median household annual income in the region being around $100 – USD 250 ($800 – $2,000 HD). This economic hardship faced by low-income families in the region makes it very difficult for young students to graduate from High school, envision a vocational or higher education degree. The ability to create new opportunities or to take advantage of current opportunities is very dismal, limiting the chances of the region to advance and prosper. Yet, some of the children of these families in need are quite intelligent. Helping them achieve a higher level of education will make Grand’Anse and its community more amenable to welcome integrated and financially developed opportunities and become self-sufficient.
